There is something about the joyous truth and romanticism of this song that always chokes me up when I hear it. It is not just a great piece of music, the lyrics take on a journey with Bruce and almost every young person has had. There is something in this song that brings back touching memories of pure joy and love. It is sweet and ad at the same time. You know that Bruce fell for this girl hard and probably never saw her again. He probably still thinks of her 60 years later, as I think of one-day romances I had in college with girls I never saw again. It is incredibly sweet, moving, and sad, Why can't more days be like this one? Because we are only young for a brief time period and if we are lucky, we have a brilliant artist like Springsteen to immortalize it forever, Long live the Boss and thank you for your tremendous enhancement of Great American music. |

About a survivor of a nuclear holocaust living in Santa Fe. Cobalt cigarettes is to speed up his demise. He says if I stay inside I might live till Saturday because of the fallout. He is probably the last survivor and anyone he sees on the Rio Grande might as well be king of the world, since no one else is left around. This is a fantastically memorable song with a melody that seems unstoppable. I could listen to this 10 times and not get tired of it. The melody intentionally sung in a minor key to give it that creepiness. The melody fits perfectly with the lyrics. The song is almost like watching a post-apocalyptic movie. |
