Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers Lyrics 2 years ago
It's amazing, I came here because I wanted to understand the meaning of the last action of the woman, looking at the sea, victorious but worried.
I have a complete different vision of the video clip.
It starts with the sea, big, deep, agitated, it looks cold and hostile, like an ocean of problems. Then the camera is moving fast to focus on the guy, running for his life, looking back to reassure himself that problems are behind. From there, we understand is on an island, surrounded by the sea is trying to escape, we know that he's trapped and he's running in vain.
The man is now walking fast, problems are behind but he's crossing a desert, the harsh but peaceful way to freedom.
And there, she is, waiting like a predator, for the next victim. The woman is dressed in black, all covered up, face included, so she can be whoever fits in. Now the guy sees the woman but underestimates the danger because it appears like his own shadow.
A moment later, the woman shows an angel face, to try to slow him down with her beauty, but when the camera shows the scene from a different angle, all we see is a very aggressive black shape chasing toward the victim, with rage but love... (lyrics :I'm the runner, you're the rebel). Well, now that he can clearly see the woman, he gets worried that woman who doesn't know him at all wants to follow/love him.
The guy is now running for his life again, desperate and tired too. When he reaches the sea, he realizes that is on island, there's no escape and the woman he sees in front of him will be his wife, he cries and capitulates. The woman is now touching, cuddling and kissing her victim. When the man is under her spell, she looks at the sea, worried.
My interpretation is that she actually sees the sea, blue and beautiful, She understood at the beginning that the man only sees in black and white as shown in the video clip, she's worried that if he's too comfortable/happy with her he will be able to see the color of life and leaves the woman immediately; for me her last look means, I'll make sure he'll never be happy so I can keep him for myself, back off beautiful, he's mine. Which seems clearly like a toxic love, the desire and infatuation described by the artist in an interview.
So, what do you think?
