The Smiths – Unloveable Lyrics 1 year ago
A man returns home after a conversation with a girl that went just like all the previous ones: he confessed his feelings, and she told him she absolutely didn't feel the same and that there was nothing and never had been anything between them. Battling with his thoughts and reflecting on his past, he ponders his failures. He concludes that he is unloveable because, from a woman's perspective, there is nothing about him that is attractive. "I don't have much in my life" suggests he has little joy in his life, and "message received - loud and clear" means that once again, he received a blunt and clear message from a girl to back off because surely nothing will come of it. He realizes that he probably seems somewhat strange to people because he's not "like everyone else" (for various reasons), but he hopelessly believes that maybe if someone really wanted to get to know him, they would also see some positive features in him and maybe even grow to like him somehow if there was a chance.

Morrissey – Let Me Kiss You Lyrics 1 year ago
I strongly believe that the main theme is one of the truths about human relationships that few really people talk about. The tragedy of existence lies in the fact that physical attraction or passion towards someone is almost always one-sided. This means that we do not have the opportunity to be with those we physically dream of (because they find us in most of the cases physically repulsive or at least not attractive at all), and rather, we can be with those whose physicality we despise. As a result, no one can be really happy, because we do not have what we want, and quite the opposite thing happens - we may have what we do not want, somebody we actually despise. And the last verses "my heart is open to you" just create a fatal illusion that the person we admire psychically will "change his/her mind" and hence we secretly believe that, but surely this won't happen - if somebody doesn't feel attraction to you till now, nothing can change and it's really hopeless to wait for something that won't happen. So the most important choice in life is tragic in fact (at least for many many people) - to stay with the one we - more or less - do not like in the physical, sexual sense or to stay lonely.

Morrissey – Alma Matters Lyrics 2 years ago
The man has pseudo-friends who constantly criticize his actions. They moralize him, "teach" him and advise him to make a significant change in his life, because the way he is and what he does is not what they say it should be. They may find his life lame or immoral. They hold themselves up as role models. The man replies that he will make his own choices and decisions and he does not agree to unconditionally make himself under the influence of questionable quality advice. He justifies this by saying that there is always someone for whom he will be important, no matter what he does and no matter what he is. Although it is not said directly, I read it as meaning that he will always be important to himself in every way and he will always have his own support.

"Everyone is different and maybe that's a good thing, but you exceeded that mark 1000 times" - I remember very well how sad the words I once heard (from my peers and it was in negative context) at school made me feel.

Morrissey – Suedehead Lyrics 2 years ago
A man falls in love with a girl he met on the street, perhaps in a store, a bar, or a museum. She works there, and he keeps coming to talk to her under various pretenses. Although he doesn't say anything directly, you can sense that he wants to deepen his connection with her. She probably understands what's going on, but she's not inclined to get involved as she does not consider him as a good lay for her. However, its hard to her to say it in a rude way. Nevertheless, he manages to get her phone number and they meet a few times. She remains distant almost all the time and asks him questions that indicate her growing negative attitude towards him. Why do you come here? What do you want from me? Why do you do it when you see how hard it is for me to bear it? Why do you send me nice and stupid messages? When he doesn't stop coming, she decides to explain that she wants to end the acquaintance with him, as he had been unnecessarily hopeful, and she just wanted to see how much he cared, how far he would go, what he would do for her, but nothing more.

The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics 2 years ago
The man returns home after the last conversation with the object of his affection. It could have been someone he had been in love with for years, and he had been hopeful that they would be together. However, during the conversation, the subject confesses his feelings, and she tells him then that she definitely do not feel the same way. His hopes were pure fiction, as the feelings were only from his side. From the conversation, it emerged that the girl is soon getting married. Her lover is someone entirely different from what the subject could have imagined - a person who, just in his opinion, does not fit her at all as he knew her. Yet, he still cares about her and wish her well. Therefore, the subject concludes that she must be attracted to that man somehow and she rather needs someone like her crush much more than she even loves him. She responds him angrily, cautioning him about his words, and that his perplexity shows that he is not as attractive as he probably might think of himself. If that was the case, he wouldn't be alone that evening, while others can turn their chances into relationships. Deeply saddened, the subject returns home lonely, thinking about what happened and weighing various ways to end it all.

The Smiths – I Want the One I Can't Have Lyrics 2 years ago
A man falls in love with a girl older than himself. She has no intention of accepting his affection, yet her behavior is immature for her age. She can't control her emotions, runs away, and is mentally unstable. Faced with her actions and social circumstances as he tries to get the one he can't really have, the man tries to rationalize the situation and convince himself that he's not really losing anything significant: passionate relationships are short-lived and primarily serve as support and desire for emotionally impoverished individuals, i.e. they are ''the riches of the poor". Such people don't bring much to the table, but what link them is their immature behavior and life based on excitement over media sensations. Ending, however, suggests that despite that thoughts he still tries to get on with her, while in fact there is no chance for this to occur.

The Smiths – Half a Person Lyrics 2 years ago
A man recalls his teenage years as times of loneliness and struggle to find his first job. It is made even more difficult by the fact that he considers himself and also appears to others as a helpless, shy, and withdrawn person. The text may suggest that he secretly loves someone and follows that person, but he is unable to confess his feelings. An opportunity arises when he moves to a big city, where finally he finds a job and starts a new life. After years pass, he meets the object of his affection again. He hopes she will notice his change as a better thing and they will become closer. However, he meets a disappointment: not only she doesn't want to be closer to him, but she also perceives the whole thing negatively, claiming that his helplessness was something she liked (and nothing more) but now she doesn't even feel that anymore.

Morrissey – Jim Jim Falls Lyrics 2 years ago
A man falls in love with a girl in some picturesque landscape. His love seems to be mad and devoted, but he does not have a courage to confess it to her. He tries to tell her about it but It's too difficult for him to say it directly. However, finally she figures it out. In fact, he is completely indifferent to her, she doesnt feel anything towards him, he is just a person she knows a bit and nothing more. She is embarassed and irritated with the thing and what she wants from him is to do what he has to do and then get off her back. So she tells him he should just express his feelings, take his actions directly and not prolong this awkward situation any further. "If you're gonna kill yourself then do it" means "just do what you want to do, it won't change my attitude".

Morrissey – The Never Played Symphonies Lyrics 2 years ago
A man is summarizing the life in his final days. He compares successes and failures. During this reflection he concludes that, in fact, nothing great happened to him during his life. And nobody really cared about him. He also reflects a person from his past, maybe a school sympathy, who was important to him, he just overestimated her actions, maybe she likes him a bit, but nothing more and he was rejected by her. Slowly dying he sees flashing images of some little gestures made by her as these are probably last visions in his mind.
