This song means a lot to me. My name is Christopher and I never knew my father. I hated life and escaped with video games, TV and music. I was looking for an answer to "the riddle" but I can't seem to find that (other than the writer worshipping a sweet refrain). I'm not religious anyway so it mostly reminds me of the slothful, decrepit mage creature in Dragon Age Inquisition with many limbs who sells high tier items and exclaims, "Urchin! Come wash my feet." Who needs a meaning anyways? You can feel the meaning when the singer absolutely goes at the treble at the end. That alone made me respect Kansas early on. I'm actually more like the songwriter before he found Christianity. I found it too but I am sticking to my guns that all philosophies are a fools errand. Better to just lie, cheat and steal your way through life. And be the fucking stupid alpha male archetype. Not that I figured that out in time to do anything about it... To me, this song is about being a thinker. A quiet one. It's about being the unpopular good guy. Finding your voice as you mature, are forced to become ambiverted and find that your voice actually booms louder than anyone's when it is unleashed. It's the burden of the intellectual. He serves the militant class, as have all scholars, scribes and such since the dawn of civilization. But he is more than just that. He is a warrior of the spirit. He does battle not against men, but demons. Whether those demons be within his own mind or the minds of others, his path is that of the tragic hero. Just as mine has been mostly a fantasy, living in worlds such as Zelda instead of reality. Standing where no man goes. Being the lone wolf and howling at the moon. The unfortunate truth is we are all just cave men who can't cope anymore without our caves and tribal behaviors that we are physiologically wired for. Our minds can't handle the concrete jungles and instant gratification. We need a fantasy we can escape to where we can conquer the monolithic demons we are presented with in the 21st century. We men are simply made for war. Born for sacrifice. Even now, if we are not fast and strong enough, we risk being conquered by other nations. Anyway, I could rant endlessly on this subject... |
