Twenty One Pilots – Johnny Boy Lyrics 2 years ago
I have to agree with the main consensus on here that it is about someone who is mentally unstable, mostly from feeling underappreciated and undervalued to an extreme degree. He has decided that suicide is the best thing for him and the writer is trying to convince him he is more than worth it. When I listened to this song when I was younger I of course took the lyrics literally, but we as TOP fans know Tyler is pretty unliteral. This take is coming from an avid songwriter btw, so I think it's an interesting POV. But I don't see a lot of people commenting on the first couple lines of the chorus. "He has fallen in love He knows it's enough The world looks down and frowns". I think these lines have significance and for some reason most people look past them. I think these lines, contrary to most of Tylers writing, can be taken literally. I get the feeling that Tyler wasn't really trying to hide anything in this song in my opinion. He (Johnny boy) is obviously very depressed and suicidal but I think when tyler says hes fallen in love, that means literally with a women or a man. I don't think it would be any inanimate object because why would the world look down and frown at that? Well it would if he was cheating. I think this song is more of a controversial take on what if a man would stop himself from committing if he could be with this other woman. Now you might be thinking why wouldn't he just divorce his wife then and be with this other person who makes him happy. But the other lyrics like the line about the medal, imply that he is a stand up guy who hasn't really done any wrong and is pretty innocent. I think he is conflicted. He doesn't want to hurt his wife and the stress of a divorce and leaving someone you once loved a lot could be what sends him over the edge. I think he is conflicted because he doesn't want to deal with that on top of what he's already dealing with but he has found someone who can take some of his pain away, maybe even enough to stay alive. And that way, it makes sense why the world would "look down and frown" even though he just wants to be happy for once. It would also make sense of the lines in the beginning when he stays home from work (possibly to see this other love interest) and doesn't tell his wife. It also says "he never really told a lie but this time he decides that it's alright". As in he's this evolved, honest human being but he's so mentally exhausted he allows himself an exception this time even though it's still morally wrong. I don't know, it just seems like those lines about his wife and lying and too significant to ignore. The stanza about fixing a chair and loving your wife and blaming it on the times is interesting. I think blaming it on the times is talking about his depression and the world changing and that's whats making him unhappy and not what it really is. But what does it mean to be "qualified to fix a chair a love his wife"? I think this is the writer commenting on how Johnny boy fell into the stereotypical way of being the manly man, fixing things and marrying a women. This leads me to think maybe the "love interest" that I mentioned before is a man. I get an older vibe from this song, I don't know why it's really not that old. But anyways, that would also make sense of why the world is looking down at him and frowning. Some people still don't accept this nature and it was especially frowned upon back then. But maybe it is saying he didn't want to be this stereotypical handyman who loves a women. Maybe he found a man who makes him extremely happy but doesn't want to make it public for obvious reasons. The line "he knows it's enough" makes me think this could be the turning point in his life and it could stop him from wanting to commit sucide. The only problem is he is stuck in this regular lifestyle that he felt pressured to go into and he doesn't want to come out of the closet for obvious reasons. The world would look down and frown and he is already down bad. So I don't know, I was suprised when I didn't see anyone commenting on the lines about love but this is just my take, I think song analysis is very interesting. I also know Tyler doesn't write about love and romance very much but frankly neither do I. Something I do a lot though which wouldn't make me suprised if Tyler did, was write about a situation or scenerio that seems very real but is simply from the writers head.

Sea in the Sky – Tamagotchi Lyrics 2 years ago
I love this song personally, I think these guys are amazing. The melody in this song is beautiful. Sam, the singer, writes a lot about the thinking about the world, and our purpose, his feelings towards it all, and the struggles of life that we all go through but maybe don't like to admit. "Back and forth, we’re always falling in between The cracks in the floor board won’t offer you a thing And I’m naive, but I know happiness is fleeting And yet we pursue it on in hopes that we won’t need it" I love this chorus. He's written a good bit about his childhood and missing it and his childhood home. I think the first line is just that, he's reminiscing about his childhood home and the floorboards he remembers, but he knows in the end it doesn't really do anything. It gives you a feeling of nostaliga but thats it. It doesn't fix how you're feeling in the present day. He calls himself naive and the next line is what I mean by he writes a lot about things we as humans don't like to admit. We pursue happiness but when we get tired, we expect we are able to go on without it with something else as a replacement. But we all know that's not how it works and he's highlighting it here. The rest of the song is pretty self-explanatory and repetitive. Great song from a great band for sure.
