The song is not about Yoko or the Beatles. The song is about Lennon himself, as a baby. Listen to the lyrics (or read them) and think about a baby just born. He’s a newborn baby in this song. Asking his mother (my “love”) to please look at me and please tell me who I should be. When you listen to it with that in mind, it gives the song much more gravitas and meaning. There have been studies done on orphans who have no mother figure ever looking them in the eyes…it’s horrible. The babies freak out. They need someone to look at them and acknowledge their existence or they go crazy. Those studies were done in the 60’s when Lennon was writing songs. A baby who isn’t “looked at” is destitute. First line of the song. |
