| From reading what I have read on here, I presume the writers are mainly from his American fan base. They are so off the mark it's hilarious . No excuse if you are actually British | |

@[plathgirl:47357] It's about a person whose father left the family home. When said father visits it makes things hard for the child. As they have to deal with all the emotions when the father goes again. The father goes into his child's room, and goes through his diary and poem (Lai) The good "lay " is actually a good "Lai" - a good poem. I can see why people think its about lovers who have broken up. I never got that from it though. Coming from a broken home , I connected to the father/child thing straight away |

@[medfly:47355] It is simple but not in the way you think. It's about a person whose father left the family home. When said father visits it makes things hard for the child. I think, like any song, you get what you bring. However, it is a song about something, with bits added for the sound off the tongue - it's a pop song, not a poem as such So all the "rattle by bones" stuff, is simply about the sound of the words and how evocative they are. The song itself is no way about child abuse, I do not think. The mistake some make is they think of Morrissey as if he is an American artist, who tries to be edgy, take Marilyn Manson or NIN for example. He is nothing like them. So, when he wrote "Suffer Little Children" it wasn't a "lets be edgy and sing about serial killers" he isn't that shallow. It was a very heartfelt love letter to the victims. This song, has always struck me as a song from a child from a single-parent family. A child who's father left. He knows his Mother is the hero of the story, she is the one who stayed and he would never throw doubt on that. He wouldn't want to hurt her. However, he is also his father's son, and in spite of himself, he is seeing his father's side of the story. The words in the song, are clearly about a father visiting is son's room, and trying to say, he will always be there. He will always protect him. "Your Mother she never knew" Can sound ominous. Like the Mother never knew about the abuse. BUT I think what Morrissey is saying the mother never knew, the father was trying his best for her and it wasn't good enough Some people do not know how to approach Morrissey's songs. If you are a shallow person, you will give a shallow reading. Take his song Suedehead, it is also about a father visiting his son. People often think the words "it was a good lay, a good lay" and presume it was Morrissey singing about sex with a lover and its the lover who makes things hard for him, when they go. It was about his father and no, it wasn't about his father abusing him. It was about the father visiting him, going into his room, reading his books, diary etc. The "good lay" was actually a "good lai" . Lai is a poem |
