Neil Young was watching TV and Nixon appeared on the tube standing in front of a hospital giving a speech on his wife's condition inside. Patricia had been a closet smoker for years and was diagnosed with lung cancer. For a brief moment, Neil Young grabbed his guitar and took a walk by himself and wrote this song. My understanding, it's not the first time he seen a story on the news and took a walk and wrote more classic songs. Supposably, he wrote the lyrics to Ohio after picking up a news paper and seeing the tragic death of four college students. I've read these songs came to him from a higher power. For one, I'm a believer. My favorite song, Cortez the Killer was off his first album. He wrote that song in his early 20's or before. What a great time to grow up in the 60's and 70's! |
