Sad to see people relating the lyrics to this song to scripture. The faded line is the "zombie path" addicts and alcoholics take to satisfy their vice. I've loved this song long before actually relating to it. You really won't fully understand if you're smart or lucky enough to never let a substance dictate your life. Many comments explain it. They drive home the phrase: "it's fucking hopeless" over interpret any other lyric your want. Bottom line, "the faded line" is a song about realizing a substance abuse problem exists in oneself. |

@[silence27:48539] lot of good points I'm in total agreement with. I usually over explain but on this one I'll just say it's simply about questioning religion. Not denouncing it, just generally pointing out contradiction. Noticed you didn't elaborate on "the tragic protagonist torments"... either you left that one blank purposely or you didn't have an explanation for it. Either way, that's the point. |

@[burnthepriest17:48538] man that's a bummer because I always thought it was much deeper than that. I always heard it as the inner struggle to trust Christian beliefs to be true while more and more terrible things happen around you. God being the demon you blame for letting good people die young. "The tragic protagonist torments" but if they said it's about alcoholism struggles, I guess I get that too |

Not saying it to "prevail over you all" just posting what Randy described as the meaning of this song from the palaces doc in 2014 well after you all missed the mark. He says he writes in a persona specifically with this song, the worst aspects of his own personality. Randy is the devil in God's country. The weirdo, the screw up, the "bad kid" he's perceived to be before the perceiver actually knows him so he leans into it and causes trouble out of spite. |

@[thefifthhorseman11:48537] Randy is also a huge punk rock fan and not the skinhead kind in the least. Believe what you want but I think it's a shot at that "rise again" motto |

@[MadJack49:48536] dude you've blown my mind. I've always immaturely thought it was about fake metal bands pretending to be real. I now think differently. Not from the south so I guess I never thought about it this way. My new outlook makes this song even better in my opinion because I can't stand seeing confederate flags flying in the rural parts of my state not just because of the history, but because the area was never part of that group. |

This song always hit me as a calling out of insecure people. Internet "victims" that strategically convince others to feel bad for them and be proud of them for embellished claims. Pathetically relying on fake affirmation to make them feel better while truly they're completely unoriginal and boring. |

Honestly hearing this the day it came out with the feelings I gathered from their music leading up to it, I've always thought this song was about the struggle within the band. Two of them fighting, arguing or disagreeing (Serj and Daron), two others witnessing (Shavo and Jon) Picture a time when we didn't have immediate access to every thought everyone farted out. I heard the feelings of their hiatus before it happened and this song was the proving point. Then it really happened. Listen to it again with this in mind. |
