Strangely prophetic for the writer (Chris Difford) As he did have a daughter, did end up with drinking problems and did break up with his partner.. I guess the song is about him, and how we are not perfect, and men sometimes have problems, but it’s a classic so I hope he doesn’t mind me mentioning this… |

It’s a story about a relationship that started out good and normal, they had a kid and it sounds like then it all went wrong he has a drinking/gambling problem and guess couldn’t handle the responsibility, ending up alone as his missus left him for someone else taking their daughter with her |

I’d say the guy is moving on after a bad relationship with the young lady. He’s enjoying her company and beauty, just enjoying the night for what it is…. Life is peaceful and easy out of the relationship and he’s confident and standing on his own two feet. Maybe it’s gonna his last night with this beauty in the desert, he’s unsure…. Great song |
