The suffering of getting old too young, or looking old too long. A complaint about the “powder” addiction that takes one close to death (“Who by fire?”) . It has so much in common with “ Oh, you've seen that man before His golden arm dispatching cards But now it's rusted from the elbow to the finger” From the stranger song. How come those two songs seem to have disappeared from Cohen’s concerts repertoire from his own old age? I think it is because they are really hard to hear, and - let’s admit it - there’s not much in the music. He still hasn’t found his “Golden Voice” yet. |
