I think you are all giving him way too much maturity. I remember this song when it came out. I was a teen. The viewpoint of the song is one of a young man or even a boy, and he's met a girl he likes a lot. He has pressure from his young friends who are immature and tease him for having a girlfriend. Use them and find another, don't be 'whipped' is the immature boy's view. I know it well.
Now he's conflicted because he has real feelings for her, and he is trying to sort of warn her off that he'll use her and dump her. But he can't quite do that, as the latter part indicates. He feels trapped. Giving your love and saying to hell with anyone else is beyond him. It's been beyond me all my life, I've repeated this same emotional trap and hurt so many. God help me. Thankfully my teenage son gets it, at least this badly drawn boy has passed on some good genes. |
