@[Wildcardi:46460] Exactly! If I'm not mistaken, in the liner notes of one of the various re-releases, Zevon himself is quoted as saying the song was a dark satire of himself at the time. The pot roast and leg biting incidents actually happened and are kind've well known Zevon lore. |

An attack on left-wing politics circa 2023, despite it being released nearly fifty years ago? Good grief...what nonsense. If nothing else I think a quick read of one of Zevon's bios will give a pretty clear indication that while not directly political, he was far from a right-winger. This song has been explained pretty well before. It's best seen as Zevon writing a somewhat scathingly satiric and over-the-top evisceration of himself and his frequently inexcusable behavior at the time. For example, the opening lines about the pot roast? That was referencing an actual incident in which a drunken Zevon ruined a friend's dinner party by grabbing a pot roast, pouring it all over himself, and then rubbing it into his clothes. It's mentioned in the liner notes of at least one re-release. The line about biting the waitress? Yeah, also part of Zevon's legendary own bad behavior. Starting with two events in his life he just takes it to a darkly comedic extreme in the rest of the song, which is completely on the nose for Zevon as a songwriter. |
