| James – Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
'Daniel's saving Grace She's out in deep water Hope he's a good swimmer' Is one of my favourite uses of double meanings in a song. Hope he's a good swimmer so he can save Grace, but he needs his saving grace so he best be a good swimmer to find that (or her) |

I'm incredibly shocked that this song hasn't got that many comments, and none detailed. On the surface of it, it's about a man who is obsessed with a woman who is not interested. However it is so funny and lyrically clever, it manages to be an anarchist song sung from the perspective of a US president. He doesn't understand why the woman doesn't want him but throughout the song is just listing all the things that would put her off. On a side note, it could be sung from the perspective of anyone in a high position of power, but considering a few things, especially the album it's on ... yeah, US president. Anyway, he just starts listing everything wrong with him and his government, all whilst not realising they are bad or the hypocrisy e.g. 'Now, no land is beyond my claim when the land is seized in the people's name By evil men who rob and maim, if war is hell, I'm not to blame!' This song is hysterically tongue in cheek whilst managing to have some really very dark lyrics: 'Now the purest race I've bred for thee to live in my democracy And the highest human pedigree awaits your first-born boy, baby And my face on ev'ry coin engraved, the anarchists are all enslaved My own flag is forever waved by the grateful people I have saved' Also the title 'everybody loves me, baby' sounds like it's going to be the most run of the mill pop song ever, and looking at the track list of American Pie it didn't catch my eye at all. However, I believe it is nearing the greatness of the title track itself. All the verses, packed with humour AND deep meaning, roll beautifully off the tongue and settle pleasantly in the ear. Also I think it makes perfect sense that this song has lots of biblical references without actually being about/from the perspective of the church - manifest destiny and all that. Thank you for reading. |

| The Smiths – These Things Take Time Lyrics | 2 years ago |

LOVE this song, but i love all the smiths, best song on hollow, david jensen ver!!!! I'm spellbound, oh...but a woman divides Like nearly all lyrics, this means different things for different people. it was probably originally meant to mean 'a woman is in the way' but for me - the fact she is a woman would be divisive .... The person the narrator is madly in love with has options, and better ones, it rips into them, the fact they are 'only' a friend, which might be okay, except the older you get the less that seems to mean 'And the hills are alive with celibate cries' if you catch my drift. Captures the desire to love and be loved, the narrator is deeply in love with this person and wants to show it, but can't because the only way this person would believe them was if, well ... Heartbreakingly resounding, etc. etc. |

| Morrissey – Piccadilly Palare Lyrics | 2 years ago |

maybe it 'wore off before noon' for Morrissey because it isn't particularly profound (apart from the end imo), but it is still one of his most lyrically clever songs, thinly veiled, suggests an actual gang, but he is actually talking about almost the opposite (in terms of 'masculinity') It also manages to be entirely inappropriate and also completely viable for radio play (i know it was popular, but i don't know whether it was payed, too young rrrrr) The version with 'cold water room' is the only one for me no dad no dad no dad |

| Morrissey – The Ordinary Boys Lyrics | 2 years ago |

HATE that it was omitted from Viva Hate (haha). What's with the historical revisionism?? Maudlin street was also butchered. Guess he no longer hoped the person in question was singing .... No comment, we all know of angel, angel. 'the cold, small streets that trap them' hits home. Another tear inducer, this beautiful one, stolen cruelly into the slowly creeping depths of obscurity - little song, what now? *insert laugh track* |

| Morrissey – Tony The Pony Lyrics | 2 years ago |

Right so this song is interesting because 1. Morrissey has deemed it 'the worst song in the history of music' 2. It is the only time Morrissey has used a certain word in any of his songs ever 3. Word on the street is it's about Tony Wilson. My guess (if the rumours are true) is that he later regretted writing such a mean song? It is worth noting this wasn't just guilt after his death either, he said that in 2006. Not sure if he was ill yet though? Anyway, it's not like Morrissey hasn't randomly hated some of his best songs before ie. Piccadilly Palare 'novelty that wears off before noon' or Ordinary Boys REPLACED on Viva Hate??? Crime. |

| The Stone Roses – Mersey Paradise Lyrics | 2 years ago |

One of the best songs of all time. I still remember me and my brother screaming it so loud in the car, my dad had to say 'it's about a a man trying to drown himself, it's not exactly glorious', we still sang LOUD and so did he. Not everyone on here seems to agree, but I think my dad's interpretation of this song is right. On here it states the lyrics as 'where the drownings are' but I think he sings 'where the drowning's done' or possibly 'gonna drown this song' (unlikely). But it is clear, he wants to be IN the river 'river cools where I belong' 'i feel like [...] falling in' 'I need air' 'couldn't breathe and clawed for air' - that's about him, the woman (who drove him to this) isn't there, hence the 'if she were there' 'bet your life I'll meet a pike' - he is UNDER the water Come to think of it, these lyrics are terrible - 'You see it in the sea' is definitely 'you see that in this heat' (river COOL) |

| Morrissey – What Kind of People Live in These Houses? Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
Might come as a shock, but i think this song is quite political. 'They vote the way they vote' and questions such as t-shirts or blouses? (stereotypically) would represent whether you vote for labour or conservatives, respectively. Who cares what people live in these houses? - not the government, that's for sure. i think the line 'They look at television thinking it's their window to the world' is autobiographical, having read Morrissey's autobiography. There is a strong emphasis on television in the early years of his life, To quote, 'Television is black and white, so therefore the world itself is black and white' All important meanings aside, this has some HILARIOUS lyrics: instead of saying 'ewww a rat' there is the pure poetry of 'What carpet-chewer, Lights up this sewer?' The 'rough trade strangers' line i'm sure needs no explanation, but to rhyme it with 'frail around these chambers'???? In my daily life that basically sums up my existence. All the rhymes in this are genius. |

| Morrissey – Mute Witness Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| Also saying that 'crying on the floor' and 'standing on the table' are proof that the 'mute witness' is a child, are wrong I'm sorry. Have you ever seen someone have an autistic meltdown? The fact that I'm no longer little doesn't stop me from uncontrollably crying and shouting when everything goes entirely wrong, and there's no way out. On top of that the 'mute witness' has clearly had a very traumatic experience. | |
| Morrissey – Little Man, What Now? Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
OK, hear me out, so many people say too many of Morrissey's songs are about Johnny Marr, but I think this one actually is. It wouldn't be too far-fetched as he has actually said 'angel, angel' on this album is about him, and I think this song has a similar sentiment, ie. he/both of them are going to fade into obscurity after the smiths. 'four seasons passed and they axed you' - 4 smiths albums 'a star at 18 then suddenly gone' - Johnny's age when the smiths were formed. |

| Morrissey – Mute Witness Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
This song makes me cry, I don't think it is mocking the 'mute witness' at all. It shows the striking injustices against people who can't speak out about things. People are saying the 'mute witness' is too young to talk but the line 'your taxi is here, my dear' completely disproves this theory, as you wouldn't send a young child in a taxi on her own. It's sad, because I have not lived very long and have practically no life experience but I've already known people who have been taken advantage of and not listened to. the line 'and you feel so much compassion in your soul' seems sarcastic to me, the people who are treating the 'mute witness' like that have no compassion and are a certain degree of evil. I always want to shout 'oh well she's only trying to tell you what it was that she saw' because the people that this song is about make me seethe with rage. The narrator of this song is the person who is actually trying to help the 'mute witness' 'now dry your tears, my dear'. I don't think the 'mute witness' is a toddler (though the message would still apply) but rather non-verbal, selectively mute, deaf, of has something else preventing them from communicating what has happened. |

| I always interpreted the 'interesting drug' to be antidepressants/anxiety medication. ' tell the truth, it really helped you' is exactly what everyone close to you says. | |
| Morrissey – The Truth About Ruth Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
I'm not sure why barley anyone has commented but it sort of seems obvious that Ruth is transgender perhaps? Anyway there might also be a tenuous link to 'Gloria' by Patti Smith (Morrissey mentioned 'horses' in his autobiography) 'Marie, Ruth but to tell you the truth, I didn't hear them I didn't see' All in all one of his weakest songs though. |

| Morrissey – Something Is Squeezing My Skull Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| It is quite obvious what the song means, as other people have said, but for me it perfectly captures what it feels like when you've been on antidepressants for a while and they start numbing you to everything and clouding your brain. This is literally the only song that does it, and so perfectly. 'something is squeezing my skull' was exactly what it felt like for me. 'something I can barely describe' and the best line, 'something I can't fight' I found myself fighting the 'chemical' feeling in my brain. I'm not saying that this was the exact original meaning of the song, but I was already feeling like this when I first found the song, and everything fell into place. | |
