@[theevilwriter:46413] It can have several meanings. The first: Many soldiers left behind pregnant wives. Many never saw their child, or even perished before the child was born. This could be the ghost/memory of a dead soldier looking over his grandson, hoping his sacrifice will let the grandson live a life of peace. The second interpretation is that the man he had been before the war died there, and he returned home as someone different. It could even be taken to mean he was so hollowed out by the experience that he felt like a walking corpse much of his life. A third interpretation is that this is a letter he wrote at some point and left in a box of war photos, in case a grandson ever found it. It was written to a boy because at the time, only men were sent into combat. |
