King Crimson – Cat Food Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is about the corruption in the food industry, grocery stores, making cheap unhealthy food that's quick to make, has a long shelf life, but because of these things, lower quality ingredients, artificial coloring and flavors, many added preservatives, not only tastes like cat food, but could be cat food. Not the good type either, like the big bags of nasty crap that look like woodchips.

Moral of the story, eat healthy, don't buy twinkies, fruity pebbles, microwave cheeseburgers, or similar products if you care about your health. Or fast food, that should go without saying though.

King Crimson – Pictures of a City Lyrics 2 years ago
This is only my opinion and should not be taken as the actual meaning of the song, you should interpret it on your own. That being said, I love King Crimson and have listened to this song many times and I consider myself a deep philosophical thinker and a poet. I also have lived in a large society for a large part of my life but have also experienced living in small villages. But here are some thoughts I having right now.

The first part is just describing what a city is, you have a concrete jungle, and the buildings are like giant faces cased in steel. You have cars driving around at night with loud flashing lights and slamming on brakes. You have lights everywhere telling you what to do. Red, stop, green go. All very man made and unnatural. This song pairs with "Cat food", I think they both are commenting on modern society, but this album was made in the 70s and I think it still describes our world today. Which is proof of the truth in the lyrics.

I would say the second verse is about all the sinning in the city, chasing beautiful but unnatural women that shave every inch of their body and put chemicals on themselves to make themselves more attractive... there's lying. hiding smiles, sins that are sugar coated, (tinseled), drugs, parties, gambling, feeling all the dopamine, you can't help but smile. Now you are at a casino throwing away your money, addiction and disease plague the mind and it cuts to an instrumental where the city is sleeping, there are still sounds but it isn't as alarming. The silence doesn't last for long though and then the third verse hits with a thundering crash and a culmination of great progression of part of the song concludes.

Now the city dweller is deaf, dumb, blind, thirsty, hungry, incoherent, on the outside you wear this dreamlike flesh, but its concrete, its artifical just like the city, and like the city, on the underside, deep within, it is a nasty place. Your soul has lost its way, it is like being in hell.

Alice in Chains – Frogs Lyrics 2 years ago
I think this song is about the beauty of true friendship and innocence and how there are always evil people who tear these things apart.

What does friend mean to you?
A word so wrongfully abused
Are you like me, confused?
All included but you
Alone

"People who tell you they are your friend but are not actually your friend are abusing the word. They are pretending. This causes confusion because you trusted them and then they betray you. Self doubt, bad thoughts arise. You don't understand how someone could hurt you so bad."

The sounds of silence often soothe
Shapes and colors shift with mood
Pupils widen, change their hue
Rapid brown avoid clear blue

"I take this very literally, in a calm quiet situation you are relaxed your pupils are normal size or maybe even smaller than normal. When reality changes, which could be interpreted as shapes and colors, mood changes as well. Like a loud siren going off or a hummingbird flying by. For some reason reality/mood has changed and now someone with brown eyes is rapidly avoiding looking into the other persons blue eyes. People usually avoid looking someone else in the eye if they are lying or they feel uncomfortable."

Why's it have to be this way?
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way

"I ask myself this question every day. Why's it have to be this way? It being, just they way things are. Why is reality so cold. Why do people hurt each other intentionally every second of the day? Why is there so much pain and I am so powerless to stop it? The world is such a sad place. Why is it like this? There is so much anger and sadness here."

Flowers watched through wide eyes bloom
A child sings an unclaimed tune
Innocence spins cold cocoon
Grow to see the pain too soon

"I assume it is a child here, appreciating the beauty of nature and watching flowers bloom right before the eyes. Boundless curiosity. The child sings an "unclaimed" tune, not labeled or copyright. It is free of ownership it is just the purest form of music for music's sake alone. I love the analogy here of innocence spinning a cold cocoon. Being innocent is like being a little baby caterpillar. But you aren't a caterpillar you are a human being. And the world is very harsh and cold, innocence can you only protect for so long until you are exposed to the horrors of reality. All the violence and corruption and hatred and greed in the world hurts. In our world today people are deprived of their innocence earlier and earlier in life. Parents letting their kids watch R movies and play violent video games, kids being exposed to porn so so young, drugs and shootings in elementary schools. Children shouldn't be seeing all this so soon in their development. They need to learn that it doesn't have to be this way."

Why's it have to be this way?
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way

"This time the chorus is less angry and more depressed and accepting of the harsh truth of reality. You are destined to die. Why fight it? One may ask."

We can learn from Layne, we should all ask, Why's it have to be this way? Every day. How can I make it better? It doesn't have to be this way. As cringy as it may sound, you must be the change you want to see in the world. I think Layne had given up on hope when he was at the point of writing these lyrics. But you don't have to. Yes the way things are suck alot, but we all have the power to make small changes in our own lives that will change the whole world.
