@bel91 I know Im a couple decades late to this comment, but thank you for this interpretation. I had a close friend who was in almost the exact situation you describe as a very young man. He did his best but ended up in prison and struggled with alcoholism once he got out. Almost everything this song describes. He left us in his 20s. I would give anything to go back and stop him from going through with it. I have been stuck on this song for months now because it so perfectly describes his situation, and Im glad to hear im not the only one reading something like that into it. *Also he was really into cars, which makes the title even more bittersweet. |

It could be about drugs, it could be about virginity, it could be about the church. I don’t know. However in response to the guy that said it’s about the church i wanna highlight some of Bono’s genius songwriting. “She’s at the bus stop with the News of the World and the Sun”. The obvious pun is that those are newspaper names but I think this could be a biblical reference since the Gospel literally translates to “Good News”. It could be interpreted as “news of the (redemption of the) world and the SON (Jesus)” Perhaps a Biblical reference to the woman at the well or something. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but you gotta appreciate the lyricism. |
