This is such a brilliant song. The band have previously discussed how this album is a bit of a commentary about society and politics of Britain but I think it can be interpreted in so many ways. “You are contractually tied to death’s door” is such a brilliant lyrics - possibly one of my favourite lines ever written. I take this to mean the grind of daily life, you put most of your life into work and people still demand more. Whatever you do is “not enough”. When the time comes to reflect back, everything you ever knew was just that and you never enjoyed things for yourself. |

I see this as a metaphor for Ricky’s, the lead singer, struggles with alcohol. He’s spoken about it a little before in interviews and I can see how song could discuss how he dislikes how he changed when under the influence. Perhaps it hindered him on stage too “you make me drop a line, at times I miss my cue” but yet it was the escapism he sought when overwhelmed “why you so sad?” Then there is the double meaning of the 0800-Good-Clean-Fun, mimicking a help hotline but also being a vice he resorted to as well for help from everyday struggles. |
