@[Blunoze:46123] I actually disagree that the man in the song is confused. I actually think the song is almost more about the human condition, specifically how all things gradually decay and end. The first few lines about the aging face and tears are the most literal. Basically giving the meaning away. And then the rest of the song reinforces this meaning though the story of a relationship that was once full of love and wonder, but it’s run it’s course. The man and woman’s lives are becoming too different and they can no longer maintain what they had and there is resentment building as they continue to try and rely on each other but they keep failing to comfort each other. The lines “I don’t hate you boy I just want to save you while there is still something left to save” is a cry of desperation while “I love you girl but I’m not the answer to the questions that you still have” is part of the man’s gradual admission that what they once had is over, but he still loves her. The repetition of “I don’t hate you” near the end of the song followed by “I don’t know” could be the point where the man’s feelings begin to die out, or he realizes they have been for some time, but when the man finally breaks and gives up on the relationship is the line “We never had a choice, this world is too much noise”. Since although neither of them ever wanted to grow apart, it was inevitable that life would eventually wear them down and pull them apart. Hence even love is mortal. It can decay and eventually die, like all things in our lives. |

@[goodoldshucks:46121] Continued: and about the whole afterlife thing. The fact he wants to “escape this afterlife” suggests to me that this relationship has become stagnant or that a part of him has died within it. And the line “give me a chance to be the person I wanna be” might actually mean he wants to recover that part of himself that he lost during the relationship. |

I personally believe that the song is actually about leaving a dysfunctional/toxic relationship where he still loves the girl, but knows it can’t go on the way it is. Specifically lines like “got nothing against you” and “surely I’ll miss you” point me in this direction. And lines like “choking on the ecstasy” as background lines are like the intrusive thoughts about his decision, as he weighs the good and bad of the relationship. But even still he compares it to ecstasy; a drug. Although it can be fun and thrilling, it’s ultimately still harmful. |
