This song made be think of 1984 or Ayn Rands book I can’t remember the name of right now. “ I wonder if they’ll take a look, find my name inside that book” Made me think of oppressive rules, a Giliad, a North Korea etc. The song had an eerie way of making it sound like every day is the same. At first I thought of “Institution green” being a place that the narrater who I imagined to be a (prol/oppressed person ). I imagine the day starting and the beat is like a clock ticking therefore I imagined The start of the song as the beginning of the day. “ Non will meet my eye.Private people in this public place.” sounds like nobody can trust each other. The way people relate to each other has completely changed because everyone is in survival mode. This public place we once enjoyed, now seems so cold- the word “cold” linking in my mind to the word “ Institution”- hence “ Institution green”- this cold weird place. “ Hunger for a pair of eyes to notice and to recognise” Here the narrator wants to relate to humans in the way they used to before the occupation. People don’t even look up from the floor anymore. “ Watch the floor and count the hours” - Do not make trouble and count the seconds to the part of the day where you can think and are allowed to make your own face expressions again.I think of June from Handmaids tale going to her room and trying to find pleasure in tiny things. “The walls are cracked and dim and we are standing in a line. Waiting for faces to be seen”- Everyday we queue up for gruel such like in 1984. The walls cracked and dim due to war. “Waiting for our face to be seen” “ Da da daa da da da da da da” and all the sounds of the song coming together is like the descent into madness that this type of occupation would conjure. The end of the song itself ( and I think this is so genius)- is like the silencing of the narrater, because they killed them or further brainwashed them so they believe the lies. “ A woman stands behind the counter after I’ll be admitted in”- reminded me of aunt Lydia and how, if you make a mistake you are just praying that they don’t spot this either on a physical list where she spots an anomaly of some sort. “Take what’s needed then just let me go”. The need for experts in certain fields, but if they get on the way of the occupation’s values, kill then mercilessly, such as in Pans labyrinth where the dr is shot .? I see the abortion thing for sure, but I don’t have the energy to write everything lol. I find it a clever and terrifying song. |

| I have just heard this song and immediately searched for meaning online. If we’re going on the idea that it is about this woman-To me, “ nearly free” has an interesting meaning. I hear it as ( almost free enough to leave the situation but not quite) and ( just like the pieces of meat, she is nearly worthless). The way “nearly free” is sung is almost like the wind carrying her away, or carrying our view of her away. We are swept to another world never to find out whether this person lived or died in their situation. Because of course she is just another woman selling her body. Invisible and beautiful. A really stunning song. I find myself trying to imagine this person’s entire life and if it is about the aforementioned narrative, I hope she was free. | |
