I really like this song. If there is a 'protagonist' throughout the album, this song is where they reach the 'jumping off point' - when they receive the gift of desperation and are willing to abandon themselves completely to a power that can restore/rebuild/relieve them. |

The Ninth Step of Alcoholics Anonymous is "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others". The Ninth Step is also when the 'promises' of the program typically begin to materialize for the Alcoholic, aka, the alcoholic being to recover and the obsession and desire to drink start to evaporate. I hear this song as commentary on the 9th step of the dope dealer or DUI fatality driver: "how will you make things right with those you've killed?" essentially. "recall the deeds as if they're all someone else's atrocious stories" always kinda bugged me personally; as this has not been accurate of my experience in recovery - I've had to own up to and pay back the damage I caused. That being said, I still can understand how a bystander or victim of someone's alcoholism could feel like "Wow, that's so great that you're all better now after you ruined years of my life" a la multiple of my exes, so, perhaps this could be me being a bit defensive ; ) |

I heard Maynard talk about an ex gf that he had that was a junkie, on an APC DVD, and I reckon that's what this song is about. He mentioned that at first he didn't know she was a junkie, he just "thought she was tired". Maynard/Maynard's ego thinks he and/or his love for her is strong enough to overpower her addiction/disease, but not the case - "far too poisoned for me", "truly thought I could make it right if I kissed you one more time", "failing miserably to find a way to comfort you", etc. "Far beyond a visible sign of your awakening" is like double entendre - she's always passed out and she's a long ways from having the spiritual awakening that will remove her obsession to get high. |
