| I have questions. If he doesn’t really like her why is he calling her all the time? If he doesn’t really like her then why does he say he wouldn’t regret her? Why does he say he misses her? It seems like he really does love her. So why would it be a lie for him to tell others that her kiss is on his list …. ? The only way the song could make sense is if he really loves her deeply, but he doesn’t want others to know that. So he makes up something about her kiss being so great, that way he doesn’t have to admit that he’s head over heels in love. …. But this isn’t how Darryl Hall explains it. What he says it contradictory to what the song actually says. So is it us that he’s lying to when he tries to blow off the song as some type of anti-love song? Or is he lying to himself? | |

I was 12 when this song came out, and I was instantly drawn to it. It made sense to me before I even started my life. I knew I’d end up there. I struggled through abuse as a kid. I went on to have a strong career in retail banking, back when it was possible to actually help people. I collected numerous awards. If something interested me, I tried it. From volunteering to care for abused primates, to understanding the criminal mind. I explored all types of religion and ended up an atheist. I married and had a beautiful son. My mind has been around the world and back again. I’m 53 now and unfortunately on disability. I struggle, but it’s my time to step back and drink in the beauty. The song calls to me again. I listen to it, smile, and realize I’ve come full circle. Eventually I will die. Some friends and family will remember me, but then I’ll be lost and erased from time. Gone down with my generation holding me close. Like we all do. And that’s ok. |
