| Talking Heads – Don't Worry About The Government Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
The perspective isn't necessarily from any one person. It's from the perspective of the collective, I.e. the government. Consider the title "Don't worry about the government" and the chorus "Don't you worry bout me." But it also draws from an individual perspective (employees) and sub-collectives (state/local government.) It's real about the average person being just a tiny cog in a huge machine, dispensable, faceless, not unlike looking up at the stars realizing you are just an insignificant speck (not necessarily a criticism, just a humbling revelation.) At the same time irreplaceable in our own little world as parents, friends, etc. and part of an indispensable collective. The scope of our lives is extremely limited relative to the universe, that's just the way it is. But within that scope we are unique as terribly important. I believe the member who commented that it's ironic and it's not is right on. It's a criticism of suburban life and a celebration of it at the same time. It's from a perspective of the collective and of the individual. As is life. We're never either critical or celebratory of our lives. It's a combination. |
