Jim Croce – Time In A Bottle Lyrics 2 years ago
Most people will say the song is about or at least for his son because he wrote it upon learning him that his wife Ingrid was pregnant. I don’t think so. I think the song is inspired by the news of Ingrid’s pregnancy, but is in fact about Jim’s love for Ingrid, which he often had a difficult time expressing. He had anger issues and mood swings. He also cheated on Ingrid. In an interview in 2012 Ingrid said that Jim “screwed around enough to know I was the one he really wanted” or something like that and in the song he says “I’ve messed around enough to know that you’re the one I want to spend time with.” How can that line be about his unborn son and not his mistreated wife? It’s no doubt a love song to Ingrid.

I had a live version of this song which was the only version I’ve ever heard and the lead singer introduces the song and says that it’s about exactly what you just said.

Built to Spill – You Were Right Lyrics 2 years ago
I think it’s a song about despair. It’s written from the standpoint of someone who finds meaning in song lyrics and who is feeling despair after having been temporarily convinced that things would eventually improve. The opening line rejects the notion that good things are inevitably to come and then sites examples of “correct” life statements, all of the above being famous song quotes. Most poignantly, “manic depression is a frustrated mess” as manic-depression is characterized as a tendency to run extremely hot and cold emotionally.
