@[FromTheHorsesMouth:45745] Ian Anderson is always good for a thought-proving take, just as Jethro Tull's lyrics were too. That said, "Locomotive Breath" being about population control seems to be a recent addition (last seven or eight years) to Ian's personal narrative. I have no reason to doubt the artist, well, outside the fact that Ian frequently changes his stories about the meaning of his songs. In particular, he has differing stories on the entire album, individual songs, even the cover art! Does he do it to remain topical? Is he having fun? Is he being cranky, and annoyed that people are trying to interpret his lyrics? Hard to say. Reading the words and understanding the framework of the album, I don't see it. I think this is another case of Ian Anderson being Ian Anderson. Let's check back in a decade for the next meaning. Hopefully Ian will still be with us. |

@[dethodeth:45744] Ha! Ian frequently changes the meanings of his songs, sometimes playfully, sometimes just to screw around, other times to fit a new topic. Locomotive Breath was never about overpopulation. Check out what he has said about other songs on Aqualung in the past, or the meaning of the album overall, as it changes constantly. Vintage, Ian. He won't even acknowledge its a concept album, but it clearly is. |
