I love this song. I just found it again after Crosbys passing. From what I can tell I think it’s Crosby saying life is complicated. People are not all good or all evil. The line “the hero knew what he had to do and he wasn’t afraid to fight” indicates the main character did something he thought was right but he somehow landed in trouble for it. The video showing him in jail supports this theory. “The villain goes to jail while hero goes free. I wish it were that simple for me.” That line shows the situation is complicated. An extreme example that comes to mind is Samuel Jackson’s character in “a time to kill.” Murder is wrong but under those circumstances who can blame him? But he still had to pay for his crime. |
