User drniandra has got it. The song is about how the Easter Uprising began in 1916. Since that time, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and many other radical groups were actively fighting the English for independance. While things did calm for awhile, when The Troubles began in the 1960s, the war never stopped. Attacks continued and civilians end up getting killed far more than British forces, the Ulster Defence League (UDA, the locals that fought with the British), and the IRA. Ar this point in time, there really is no reason to continue fighting. Thus they are fighting like mindless zombies, as the song implies. Nothing in their head, they're just zombies. The radicals don't even know why they're fighting anymore. Thus the song is calling for peace. Most of the fighting finally stopped April 10, 1998, when the Good Friday Agreement was signed |
