| The Triffids – Tender is the Night (The Long Fidelity) Lyrics | 2 years ago |

I just think this song is the perfect finish to the album, it is able to reflect on the themes of grief throughout the album, yet allows for hopeful lament towards the end. This album finisher says it all about the album, life is hard, death is inevitable, however it just makes us think at the end "let's make good with the time we have left" I think this is the power of David McComb's songwriting. |

I have been non-stop listening to the Jimmy LaFave version of this song for a good long while. I believe that the song discusses how we chase and run from illusions of thoughts like love. The Girl from the Red River Shore represents all our romantic encounters which never blossomed. The singer is on the road as opposed to facing his feelings for this woman. Therefore by the time he is prepared to confess his love, she is gone. Inherently tied into this concept are notions of toxic masculinity in how men have felt that they must suppress their emotions and maintain a facade of strength, while deep down they suffer. This leads them down a path to depression as they continuously feel more and more isolated from the world which surrounds them, becoming shells of their former selves. |
