I know there are several comments on this song but I'd like to give my own interpretation linked with the video itself (I haven't been able to read all the comments so it's quite possible that someone ever wrote the same as me). First of all I agree with some points I have read in the top comments like the criticism of narrator and that sort of hate he feels and wishes with to punish the ones he loathes, and after having watched the video I think I've reached out a conclusion. At first he pleads the Karma Police for arresting/punishing that girl and that boy he hates because of his reasons (I think that's not the point of the song actually), and he also talks about what will happen to the ones that bother him. (I think that in that term, the Karma Police is like his ego and his strong personality he relies on when he's down and wishes he could do something to solve the situation he's in or disturbed him). Then, he seems defeated, wrecked, as if his pleas hadn't had the result he expected because his hate has tucked into his mind and all he can feel are vengeance wishes. At the end, when the "For a minute there..." starts I think is a representation of how he let his mind drive him to his own destruction due to he focused a lot on hating and not ignoring what made him feel bad. Therefore, the meaning of the song in my honest opinion is how you can be led by your ego and hate to your self-destruction and I link it with the video because there's no one with him in the car and he's not driving so "the driver" could be his own mind as I've said before and he's sitting in the back watching his pleas be fulfiled. About the self-destruction point I thought that as a cause of the gasoline smeared by the car (his mind) across the road (the time he spent wishing punishment to the ones he hates) and the match the man hides and throws into the road burning the gasoline he smeared when the man realised he caught him in his worst moment when he's worn out by his own hate. And, to finish with, the burning scene with the car driving backwards is like the attempt to quit from your own hate but it's too late because to turned into the worst of you and there's nothing left to do but die with your own mind. So, Thom was trying to teach us not to be covered by your hate and let the things of life be and not get destroyed by your own bad wishes. |
