The Shins – Mild Child Lyrics 1 year ago
Here's what I've gathered:
This ten year old,
Smiling summer eyes
They'd win, they'd win
Through their survival, he (you?) showed us how survival showed us how they can dance like an angel
There was a tap came on the glass, a sign, some young nervous head just learned to punish
He had (he'd) come inside to hide away
And ease your haters on the wing
He sighed and tried to hide but I recall the (your?) alien eyes and what that felt like
These little happy laughing murderers
Would delay in the (crime? Crave? I'm not sure about this part. It might be "the delayed window came")
But don't allow yourself to make believe any kind of virtuous life
Because each of us is both of them, one blowing out, one breathing in.

@[A:49028] voice in the dark First of all, Hey you left this comment on my birthday! Second of all, while I may definitely not agree with most of your points, this essay you wrote goes hard. Like seriously I disagree but it's fvckin poetry man you should really take up writing as a hobby, got chills reading this shit. Also you might need more education on what satanism is- cause what they worship depends on the kind of satanism. Some satanists are non theistic so they don't even believe in the devil, therefore they don't worship him. Second of all, even if they do, they're not dangerous, and I highly doubt any god worth worshipping would shun or punish anyone for not worshipping him. But hey I'm just a deconstructing 18 year old converting to paganism so I'm on as much of a journey as anyone else, take what I say with a grain of salt.

The Shins – Black Wave Lyrics 2 years ago
Well I think some of the lyrics here are wrong first off, which is fine no hate to the lovely person who uploaded this, it's hard to tell what he's saying sometimes. But onto my interpretation, I think it's similar to spilt needles in the sense that it's about the hardships of living and finding reason for life without religion. Only this time he's accepted it. Mercer has talked about his dislike for religion, particularly the Catholic church and all the hate they spread. He fell away from it because of that, the blind following of a problematic leader. However going through life without a god can be one of the hardest ways to live. He also addresses this in 'A comet Appears' when he says "the wind from a wasp could blow them into the sea with stones on their feet lost to the life and the loving we need" speaking about how people have religion and God as a way to get the love that we all need and to kill the aimlessness and loneliness of life. To know someone has a greater plan. The lyrics "around the block and airborne blind" show how chaotic and scary it is to go through life with only yourself, you can feel lost, like your blind and being thrown through the air. "This goose is cooked these tongues are tied" could be speaking on how it's done and he can't go back to any religion because there's no point. It's over. He references this in spilt needles when he says "you never saw it before but now that hardly matters" talking about how he didn't foresee the lonely lost feelings of life without religion when he denounced it, but there's no point because that's the way life is and you're stuck with it. "But looking on the brighter side there's far less to which I'll be obliged" he doesn't have to worry about all the rules and judgement within religion, all the worries of heaven and hell, he's not obligated to do anything and is free at least. This could be a stretch but it's how I view it. I think he's accepting the "subtle aching tone" of life and how lonely and lost you truly are, but you have to look on the brighter side fi get through.

@[fly:46497] at tree level I love the idea of mercer's differing opinions with this mentor, but how do you know it's about communism and not about his falling out with the Catholic church he was forced to attend as a child? (It's completely up to individual interpretation I'm just genuinely curious)

@[Maroliver:45586] I don't think you're right honestly. First of all I think most songs can be interpreted differently by different people and there's nothing wrong with someone getting a different meaning out of it. Like how you can get that meaning out of it, and if you wanna believe that you can obviously. With that being said, for the sake of argument, I think I'd say the amount of emotion he puts into his singing in this song makes me think it means so much more. Personally I find there to be a lot of depictions of war imagery throughout the lyrics.
