| Eagles – Pretty Maids All In A Row Lyrics | 2 years ago |

This song has been a favorite of mine for so many years. After reading through some of the comments, I thought I'd add mine... I think this song represents the realization of one's mortality. The phrase "Pretty maids all in a row" was used to describe doomed prisoners waiting on their turn at the guillotine in the French revolution. The song starts as a chance meeting between two old friends,("Hi there, how are ya") , the inevitable reminiscences of times gone by("Seems like we've come a long way"). Then on to the gentle admonishments of spending too much time living in the past at the expense of the moment ("Why do we give up our hearts to the past? And why must we grow up so fast?"). Then comes the inevitable realization of maturity and experience that forces us to see life through an entirely different, and not always pleasant lens ("And all you wishing well fools with your fortunes Someone should send you a rose") And finally, the realization that the "storybook" (read: the good times) has come to a close, and that we're all inevitably going to die at some point... that we're all just pretty maids all in a row, each waiting for our time to come. The interpretation may sound morbid, but I think the song itself is beautiful, and a wonderful reminder to cherish each moment. |
