I agree with a lot from the previous comments that mention childhood trauma and sexual references. The moment I heard the song I thought the lyrics are about domestic, sexual abuse of a child, so to me this is one of the darkest songs ever recorded. I think the title is a reference to the irreversible loss of innocence. The song starts off from the abuser’s perspective: “obey/endure/concede” “come won’t you stay”, “All ends in tears”, “Thoughts most in impure”. Terrifying… I feel there’s a strong sense of guilt and struggle on the abuse’s part throughout (“both shall we bleed”, “deprive to feel so alive”), but their dark side wins (“wicked perfection”, “dark resurrection”). The chorus is from the victim’s perspective (“ I fear to turn on the light, for the darkness won't go away”). “The midnight knows it well” suggests that abuse happens regularly. The helplessness of the victim knowing what’s coming to them but being unable to do anything about it is harrowing. The “ Prayers cannot get through..” part could be interpreted as either person’s thoughts. Then this: “Too dark too sleep Can't slip away Open or close My eyes betray” The victim desperately trying and failing to hide their fear to avoid exciting the abuser. I think the songs ends with the victim’s death, their only escape, either because they succumb to injuries or they gave up the hopeless fight. “Hello darkness, say goodbye”. Brutal.. |
