Maynard does nothing on accident. The lines "Toss the extras over // (women and children first)" strikes me as VERY important. I believe this song is about climate change: - "Blood sky every morning // should've seen the warning": Refers to 'red sky at morning; sailors take warning.' We've seen irrefutable climate change issues coming for decades, but we've largely ignored them. Once-a-century storms every few years; massive forest fires.. Maynard has even mentioned, in interviews, the impact of climate change on his wine business. - "Captain to the seamen // man your battle stations": IMO, this is discussing the overfunding of the military in the face of horrible natural disasters. In this case, the 'captain' is trying to fight a god-level natural disaster (Poseidon) with cannons. There's some absurdity there that totally fits Maynard's style (see also: "Learn to swim.") - "Toss the extras over // (women and children first)": When it comes down to it, funding women's & children's programs are often the first cut to handle disaster relief, economic relief, tax relief, etc. So not only are we overfunding the military in the face of something it is completely unprepared for, but we're cutting off resources to our own future. "Toss the extras over." |

| Toadies – Pressed Against The Sky Lyrics | 3 years ago |

This is the Toadies. They're almost always creepy. The narrator is likely watching a woman sleeping... she may even be dead already ("Pressed against the sky // eyes wide open..."). Listening to this song within the context of the entire album absolutely backs this up. A few songs later, he's talking about "I'll keep you near // scattered around my apartment." |
