This song is clearly about divorce and one person moving on while the other is left behind to grieve the loss of the relationship. I've listened to it for the last 16 years and loved it. But I was today years old when I realized: it's from the perspective of the child caught in the middle! The second verse makes it clear: "I never was able to understand Why both of you chose to be just friends Thought we were a stronger family I guess I was wrong I was left with just holidays Maybe a Saturday or a Sunday Never had much time to spend together And I felt so alone" The child was left with the mother and the father was mostly absent after the divorce. The bridge makes it even more heartbreaking: "I'm glad you have your life With your two new children and your wife It lifts my soul to see you happy" She accepts that it's too late to undo the damage, but she finds peace in knowing that her father is happy. Even if that happiness doesn't involve her. She'd rather have two happy parents apart from one another than two parents living together in misery. ...who's chopping onions in here? :'-( |
