I'm wondering whether or not this song was dedicated to John Lennon. "He plays Be bop a Lula, baby what I say" - Lennon played be bop a Lula. He also did a song about a 'sweet lovin woman' in 'woman'. etc. It's a great song and lyrically darker than people assume, in stark contrast with the upbeat/feel-good melody, akin to many tracks by dire straits. The lyrics take a turn at the last verse: And after all the violence and double talk, there's just a song in all the trouble and the strife. You do the walk, yeah, you do the walk of life. Hmm, they do the walk of life". I think it implies that although he had a great time, playing his music, earning a living doing what he loved, at the end of the day they were only songs, and as he heads home realises it no longer matters. He's only playing a song amidst all the 'trouble and the strife'. Perhaps this is inferring Lennon's desire to do more with his music, using it as a political platform to shake things up. I may be over-thinking the last part, but you never know.. |
