When Pollard sings “The club is open” he is talking about the Monument Club which was the name for his garage on the backside of his house where he and his buddies would drink. They had a neon sign on the inside that read The Club is Open. |

Robert Pollard has stated that the first lines of this song are about his next door neighbors pet rooster Big Daddy which a picture of appears on the front of the album Devil Between My Toes. He woke up early one morning and saw Big Daddy walking down his driveway with a six pack beer ring around his neck. Also a little known fact is that the woman whom Big Daddy belonged to used to make fun of Pollard when big daddy used to chase him which apparently happen frequently. She used to call Pollard a “chicken” and “king shit” for running from the rooster. Thus the nickname or monikers King Shit and the Golden boys. |
