I think to say the song is entirely about her relationship with Trent Reznor is too simplistic. This song is much too complex to be solely about the two of them. She does reference him in the song that's for sure and there is a live version of the song from Sessions at West 54th Street from the late 90's where she clearly references him and it would seem she was still kind of pissed off at him. But that's neither here nor there. The song is about a failed relationship with a man. The relationship was weak and fell apart. But here's a great part of the song, not only is the singer lamenting how weak the relationship with the man is, she's longing for another woman be it a friend or a lover who isn't present at the time as well. "I've still got that belle dragging my foots" Missing the woman. "I need a big loan from the girl zone." I need a woman to talk to about this relationship I had with this man. "Boys in their dresses and you're not here." She's surrounded by men, but all she wants to see is something feminine, she wants to be with this other woman. The song is truly beautiful. It'll forever be one of my favorites. |
