| Gogol's The Overcoat meets Potemkin Mutuny. It's of a piece with Radio Free Europe. I seem to recall one or nore of their dads were military or fireign service or similar. Good arty obscure lyrics . | |

Holocaust. I think Chronic Town he was making veiled references to political historical events to generate lyrics. If they weren't so savvy about being murky obscure (murmur?l) they might have named album The Kronstadt Moment which has been used to refer to an American communists moment of disillusionment with Bolsheviks I could be way off base. |

TLDR. CHRONICTOWN = Kronstadt Harborcoat is probably drawn from Kronstadt Mutiny. A turning point in Russian revolution was first sailors' mutiny in Petersburg later Leningrad. After experiencing actual Bolshevik rule they "re-mutinied" and after waiting for concessions to representative government from Leniin government were ultimately defeated and executed en masse. Shivs on wood is probably bayonets Was never real committed to this till for no reason I thought of CHRONICTOWN being a pun on Kronstadt when reading Emma Goldman to see how she and Trotsky relate to Emmanuel Goldstein. So all the deals the Bolsheviks made with the people and the sailors were as good as a handshake . Backstabbing fits. this is all speculation as I have no info on Stipe exposure to Kronstadt |
