This song is so 60s! The ghetto doesn't necessarily have to be the south side of Chicago, or the dirt roads on the other side of the tracks in Lubbock. The original ghetto was an old iron foundry in 1516 Venice where the poor where kept separate from the rest of the city. This song tugs at the liberal heartstrings, since it leaves you with the feeling we could and should do something to break the circle; and after all, that could have been you or me on the other side face down in the street with a gun in hand while mama cries. On the other hand, I understand why conservatives can't stand the song; no affirmation whatsoever for their greed and selfishness. |
