Honestly, this song is amazing. One of my favourites. I heard it live and that was one of the single best experiences of my life. I don't have too much input with the meaning of the song, however. I think (emphasis on think) it's mainly about pursuing through manipulation and toxicity in a relationship in the hopes that the person will recognise the errors of their ways and return to how they once were. The final verses of the song talk about their relationship (the rose) only being able to thrive amongst the toxicity of the speaker's partner's behaviour(the dark). I used this song for a project in high school where you had to make a soundtrack for Romeo & Juliet, and made the female figure mentioned in this song to be not Juliet, but the hostility and conflict between their families and how their relationship would never have been publicly accepted should they have announced it before their demise. I thought it applied and gave good insight. I don't really know. Just here to compliment the song and give my own loose interpretation. |

| My theory, which isn't solid and I'm open to any rebuttals or arguments, is that the song is written in the perspective of someone who's been raised or taught by some individual or corporation, realises that the things he's been told and lessons he's been taught are all a wicked scheme meant to trick him, or manipulate him, into doing what they want him to do in order to gain his loyalty or submission. But then he realised that he's been told nothing of truth and revolts. Again, this is just a my interpretation and I'm glad to hear other peoples' thoughts. | |

I think, and forgive me if I'm wrong, that certain lines throughout the song imply an apocalyptic event. And some other lines kind of sound like someone coming from a life of poverty or working class talking to another individual of a higher class, such as royalty or a more privileged life, who is denying the fact that the world's situation is taking away some of their luxury and social status, as in an apocalypse, none of these things matter. Also, the name of the song can be interpreted as being in n a situation where you're in an area where mass death or disease struck, and you can't leave. I also find the song has a certain feel of urgency, or danger, or crisis of some form, which strengthens my theory of apocalypse. I could be wrong, though, as this is just a theory. I am curious to hear some other opinions and theories as well. |
