Jackson Browne – Sing My Songs to Me Lyrics 1 year ago
This is one of my favorite songs—it is on Jackson Browne’s “For Everyman” album which revolves around feelings of uncertainty, and the universal search for meaning in this tumultuous world. The first time I heard this song, I thought it was about the reflection of a songwriter on his world, but I soon realize the meaning is much more than just that. In the first line, Browne asks to “sing my song to me”, a cry to ask for thoughts and emotions conveyed from a different perspective. These “songs” are metaphorical dreams, hopes, promises, and aspirations—and most importantly, memories. Some memories are connected with sunlight, and positivity, while others are connected with shadows, and darkness and despair. Yet humans have a tendency to capture memories in both happiness and sorry, reflecting out dual nature. This plea for a song is a bid to soothe his lingering nostalgia—and to lift his memories out from the deep vertices of his subconsciousness and relive precious moments in a dreamlike state—growing and emerging, budding “strange new flowers”, only for his dreams to cease when morning comes.
In writing this, I am reminded of a quote by Tennesse Williams: “Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going.” How are we supposed to grasp every fleeting moment as it rushes past, and how are we expected to hold onto the essence of it all when time itself seems designed to erase it?

Garth Brooks – The Dance Lyrics 1 year ago
@[equinerider2003:51236] I know you'll never see this... for gosh sake you are 34 now, but I am also 14 and absolutely love this song. It is a reminder for all the good times you've had, no matter how it ends in the end. This song evoke a nostalgia in me for a time that I've never experienced, powerful, deep emotions that speak to the testament of this song.

John Denver – I Want To Live Lyrics 3 years ago
There are children raised in sorrow
On a scorched and barren plain
There are children raised beneath a golden sun
There are children of the water
Children of the sand
And they cry out through the universe
Their voices raised as one
This must be one of my favorite songs by John Denver. In this song, he shares such profound views on humanity as a whole, all while singing a beautifully written song. John tells that there is so much in life to see, so much to be thankful for, and so much to do.
Have you gazed out on the ocean
Seen the breaching of a whale?
Have you watched the dolphins frolic in the foam?
Have you heard the song the humpback hears five hundred miles away
Telling tales of ancient history of passages and home?
Personally, I wish I was fortunate enough to experience all of these things that John so eloquently describes. To those feeling sorrow about their lives, they should know that there is so much more, so many more things in nature that are breathtaking. Since Denver grew up in the country, he has seen many wonders great and small, which encourage him to keep on living. I, too, want to “live, I want to grow, I want to see, I want to know. I want to share what I can give, I want to be, I want to live.”
Hopefully, one day soon, I'll be able to experience the full gift of life, too. For now, however, at least I have this beautiful song that shows what I have to look forward to in my future.

Janis Ian – Society's Child Lyrics 3 years ago
This song discussed the often forgotten topic of racism. Musicians don’t often write songs about this, as they may fear that it may be taken as controversial. A white girl and a black boy are dating, however their relationship is frowned upon because of the era that the song was written in. “Society’s Child” is referring to the couple being a victim of their time. The main character will one day “raise up (her) glistening wings and fly.” This is alluding to the fact that she believes that she needs to fight injustice in the world in order to refine society. I can’t imagine racism being part of everyday life. Why must we discriminate against other people simply because of their skin color? After all, we all stem from the world. Perhaps we have some differences, but we are fundamentally the same. We all share the same anatomy as others, we all were born on the same planet, but most importantly, we are all human. Regardless of skin color, we must learn to see things beyond society’s perspective. As we have seen in recent years, racism has greatly decreased, though it is still there. People must stop regarding each other by religion, skin tone, and who we are.

Foreigner – I Need You Lyrics 3 years ago
I believe this song talks about the main character's necessity to have his wife/girlfriend in order to fully live his life. For example, the song talks about the fact that he feels as if he is living “a misguided goal.” Overall, this has led him to have a miserable life, or one which he has lost his focus in. I believe that in an extreme scenario, humans can become confused and misguided. When we have a tremendous life change, for example death or another tragic event, we begin to seek answers in a world that we can no longer understand. In a Kansas song, there would probably be a reference to how religion can help you understand the world, however in this song, the main character doesn’t do anything to get his life back on track. Instead, he only makes this song as a desperate plea for his lady to come back. After looking at many Foreigner songs, it has been clear that many of them convey the same message in some way or another. Our subconscious mind knows that once a tremendous negative change is made, it is unlikely that change will ever be reversed. However, since we live in search of answers, this fact becomes obscured. Life moves forwards, not backwards.

Foreigner – Fool for You Anyway Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is about a man who when his woman leaves, is severely affected. His love for her left a metaphorical mark on him, and he will live his whole life from now on regretting ending the relationship. The term “fool for you anyway” may suggest that the woman did something wrong, but he still loves her. I believe that the meaning of this song is that not all relationships are successful, as everyone makes mistakes. Regardless of how small the mistake is, it can lead to bigger consequences down the line. Though we may strive for perfection, perfection is impossible. The main character in this song clearly misses his partner, and waits for her to come home. Though he subconsciously knows that she will never return, his love affects his way of thinking rationally. Sometimes, humans can be in deep love with someone even if they may not be perfect. However none of us are perfect, we all make mistakes. We must embrace these imperfections in order to proceed in the course of our lives.

Foreigner – At War With the World Lyrics 3 years ago
In this song, the main character is at war with the world. Even though he has no fortress, castle, or military aid, he is confident that he will most certainly win the war. As the song progresses, it talks more and more about the fighting. However, the song fails to clarify what the main character is fighting for. In one verse, it talks about him “fighting to be free,” but neglects to clarify what this means. Why is he truly at war with the world? This song could be more appropriately used in a warning of a Zombie attack :), as it never makes the characters intentions clear. Some Foreigner songs talk about a relationship, but some talk about obscure topics like these. Even if I try my best to interpret it, I am unable to. From the song, I can conclude that the character is at war with the world, but why, how, when, and where? In my opinion, I find this song to be less thought out than the rest of the songs that I enjoy listening to by Foreigner. The only reason I analyze this song is because I am going through my CDs and writing about every song on there. “At War With The World” lacks a deeper meaning to the lyrics.

Foreigner – Woman Oh Woman Lyrics 3 years ago
This song talks about the love that a man has for their woman. Unlike most of Forigner’s songs, this one has a deep metaphor that I really like.
And your love flows down like a river
'Til it reaches down to the sea
And it's then you start to thinking
Will the water, will the water cover me?
This type of love makes the author appear as if he is head over heels in love in light of his woman. The chorus begins with a plea by the author for his woman to not bury him alive, in his own love for her. She makes him feel special and valuable, which is all that matters in a relationship. I believe that Lou Gramm wrote a song for most of his relationships. If this is true, in this album, Foreigner, we are able to see the highs and lows of Gramm’s experience in love. Sometimes, in songs like these, we see that he is truly in love with a woman that loves him. In others, such as “The Damage Is Done,” he has bad experiences which he learns from. Though he learns from his mistakes, he can never guarantee perfect relationships afterwards. In later songs, Gramm once again writes about bad experiences. In some songs like these, his relationship with another woman is successful. If more or less each song represents a different relationship he has had, what made them end? In deep love like this song describes, it appears as if nothing could ever go wrong. However, nobody is perfect, and maybe these songs all describe the path of a single relationship that he had.

Foreigner – Long, Long Way From Home Lyrics 3 years ago
One of my favorite books of all time is “1984” by George Orwell. In it, the “Party,” composed of a dictator, Big Brother, rules and controls the mind of everyone in the nation. After looking back on the book, it appears as if this song acts as a summary for it. When most people hear this song for the first time, they may think that it alludes to the author warning of an upcoming Zombie apocalypse. However, I interpret this song entirely differently. I believe that this song talks about a man who sets out on a mission to fulfill his true destiny. As he travels further and further from home, he grows increasingly homesick. Though he wishes to turn back, the character mentions that “it’s what we need to do.” Could this reference G-d setting the man out with a purpose? Lou Gramm didn’t become a Christian until nearly two decades after this song was released, so I doubt that this was intentional. Looking back on what I said, I find it, with all due respect to people that interpret the song this way, highly illogical to feel as if the author intended this as the meaning for the song. After all, the title is “Long, Long Way From Home,” which highlights the main character's inability and desire to travel home. This song represents homesickness.

Foreigner – The Damage Is Done Lyrics 3 years ago
In a relationship, it is paramount that the two people get along with one another. If they are not successful in doing so, they can end up very unhappy. These fights can lead to metaphorical “scars” on somebody. The “scars” are things that we must live with, they grow to be a part of who we are. They can never be erased, but instead can be mistakes that we can learn from. In this song, the phrase “the damage is done” is used to describe the damage that a relationship can have on a human being. The “scars” are the damage, and affect who we are as a person. In this song, the author recounts on one of his many relationships that went south. I like to think that Lou Gramm wrote a song about every one of his relationships. Since the band wrote many of its songs in the 1970s, life was different back then; it makes the songs more difficult to relate to.

Foreigner – Starrider Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is very underrated. Many of Foreigner’s songs do not have deep meanings, but this song is an exception. This song is very similar to “Stairway To Heaven,” because they focus on taking a risk to get into heaven. The star is metaphorically representative of a human life, where it moves through space, just like we move through life. We all strive to reach the end star, heaven. However, I believe that there are more comical ways to interpret the song. It can also be interpreted as a song for when the aliens invade the world! But, a true deeper meaning is that the song could be talking about love. The “ride” can represent the true essence of love, while the end destination is undetermined, letting it take you wherever it takes you. “Not knowing where I was going” can represent the unpredictability of a relationship. Anywhere the ride (relationship) can take you is unprecedented. Foreigner’s songs were mostly about love, and this one may be no exception.

Kansas – Point of Know Return Lyrics 3 years ago
The song talks about a ship that sets sail, and the author wonders how long until it’s too late to turn back. But, in the broader sense, this song talks about change and influence. How long is until it’s too late to turn back? Certainly, our past experiences have a tremendous impact on our judgment and expectations. Our preconceived notions and prejudicial stereotypes are developed through childhood and adolescence, thus they affect the way we think about ourselves and our lives. As humans, these can lead us to see different perspectives on global issues (i.e politics.) Modern day uniformity and commercialization has led us to believe certain things. But, as long as we let our unique judgment and wisdom guide us into the future, we will survive. The “point of know return” is not a bad thing, it’s just an obstacle that we must overcome.

John Denver – Perhaps Love Lyrics 3 years ago
Though these comparisons are very meaningful and deep, Denver goes at great lengths to explain why he compares them to love. For example, John Denver compares the ocean to love because it is “full of conflict” and “full of change.” Though he explains most comparisons, he leaves some open for interpretation. “Like a fire when it’s cold outside” shows that love keeps us warm, and always has a place in our hearts. Denver also compares love to a resting place, a shelter from the storm. He shows in his music that in the endless moving stream of life, we need to find a break; in love, music, and nature. Those three principles are what all of his songs rely on.
