Been one of my favourite songs for 20 years, but never known really what it meant or what it was about..
But for me, the crystal mountain is the perfect being, trying to get there will do you harm. Trying to get to where you want by forgetting who you are.
I don't find any of it about self harm though, I don't think the cross turned dagger bit should be literal. |

I always think this one is about someone in particular that pissed Chuck off.. But for me at least, it reminds me about how I am sometimes, too negative. Maybe not everyone is like this but I feel it reminds me of how I should be more supportive of other people even though I don't agree with what they do, their choices might seem stupid to me, but that doesn't mean you should try to stop or help them or change them. |

For me this song is about choosing beauty over personality, or even maybe trying to improve your own physical attractiveness over your mental state. It means a lot to me. Great song, The later Death really has some interpretable lyrics to them, but for me this one will always be about loving someone because they're a good person, regardless of their physical looks (or maybe a warning about the negative side of that; being with someone because they look good isn't good for you - find the right person not the one you are physically attracted to). |
