| The Beatles – I'm Only Sleeping Lyrics

This song is clearly about an acid trip. The singer has had a long evening on LSD and is still feeling the effects in the morning. "When I'm in the middle of a dream; Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)." The steady psychedelic strumming of guitar and drums is quite transportative and takes the listener into the headspace of the singer who is still blissed out from the evening before. There is a pleasant feeling of carelessness that overtakes the drug user and the "comedown" the next morning often feels dreamy; he has a smile on his face and after getting up likely interacts with the busy world outside. "Runnin' everywhere at such a speed; 'Til they find there's no need (there's no need)". The straight society (Bus drivers, business men, politicians, etc.) haven't been enlightened by LSD's mind altering sensations. For the drug user, there is an altered sense that the world and "straight" society is moving too fast and pointlessly rushing towards useless goals. The singer sends a gentle plea to anyone who might interrupt his bliss "please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...I'm only sleeping." The music and lyrics all point in one direction, and this classic psychedelic nugget from 1966 was one of the first drug-influenced album cuts to accurately describe the 'trip' so many were experimenting with. A classic. |

@[gbloss:44581] I think you really nailed this one. Especially the vague ideas of "Butch"...i remember those Looney Tunes cartoons! "December Boy" is clearly a self-referential line. Well Done! |

@[stan113444:44580] don't forget, their album from '67 was called "Their Satanic Majesties Request' and one of their last hits was 'Sympathy for the Devil' from '68. It was a self-referential line and I gotta love 'em for it!

@[johnny_dago:44579] This is a good interpretation. "Their Satanic Majesties Request" was out in '67, 'Sympathy for the Devil' was a hit in '68. They had plenty of mainstream hits by then but all the demonic imagery must have garnered them a lot of negative press. |
