@[tim1125381:44522] This is an awesome interpretation of the lyrics, but as you mentioned, they were written at least 2 or 3 years before the 1977 NYC blackout. I don't think that diminishes them as a possible meaning, though, as NYC in the mid-70s was pretty dangerous, crowded, and dark, even with the power on. No doubt that Tom Verlaine, as a poor 20-something poet/musician from Maryland trying to make it in New York amongst all the decadence and decay, probably felt that current very strongly as he wrote this. |
