I think this song is a metaphor for a long relationship with a girl that he doesn’t realize he loves until it’s too late. First verse is when they first meet and maybe the girl is the first one interested. Second verse he starts to feel something could maybe happen for them; he likes her. Third verse he is trying to not fall for her, probably thinks he doesn’t want to be tied down, he is thinking he doesn’t really care about her all that much, and he’s exploring other girls (these old Tom-cat feelings you don’t understand). Fourth verse they have broken up but find themselves drawn back to each other after they have split with their respective lovers, but still he is fighting it and tells her not to fall in love with him. Fifth verse, he’s been thinking about her a lot and decides to pursue her again, but finds she has fully moved on with someone else, and finally realizes he has always loved her. Beautiful, sad song that rings true for many. |
