The true genius of this song is that you could take it literally. But I think he's talking about what many say you should do to fight loneliness, which ultimately is about being alone in life, without deep enough connections. Smiling all the time, shining your teeth, and laughing at all of the jokes, even if you do not find them funny, will not really fight loneliness. All of that might make you a better conversationist, and might get you out of the proverbial shell. All that might hep to fight loneliness, temporarily, for a while. Ultimately, it seems to me, "solving" loneliness is always temporary. It is said that we all enter the world alone, and we leave it alone. We will all have times where we feel lost and lonely. (Hopefully. I wouldn't trust those who say they've never felt lost or lonely at any point in their lives.) And hopefully we make enough deep, meaningful connections in our lives to help fight loneliness. "And that, Charlie Brown, is what fighting loneliness means to me."
