| Steely Dan – Babylon Sisters Lyrics

This line tells me it is a satirical look at the lifestyle of the elites of the movie industry in LA.
“ This is no one night stand
It's a real occasion.”
It’s satirical because he knows it is indeed a one night strand and that’s all it ever possibly could be with the Babylon sisters. |

@[AlexDeLage:44315] agree, it is a relationship gone sour. There is no more fire, it’s burned out, and literally it could be a sexual euphemism. The hole being sexual intercourse. With the Dansters their lyrics have ALOT of that going on. But really, there is more than one meaning behind most of their songs. This one really hit me that this poor guy is trying to get out of something that isn’t working for him anymore and it’s obviously a love affair gone bad. |

I thought it had a sexual connotation. The fire in the hole is gone meaning the sex in the relationship isn’t working out. Therefore the relationship is falling apart. |

@[laconic:44138] I like your interpretation. And it is disturbing and yet a tad mesmerizing when you have beautiful music mixed with perversion. I don’t always know what to do with it because it’s hard to square the two in my mind. I just tell myself to be aware of what you’re actually listening to (as much as possible with the lyrics) and focus on the music. What I don’t want to do is listen and pretend that the lyrics aren’t really what they really are. Might as well face the music —and the lyrics so you don’t gloss over the dark stuff and assume they are just your average contemporary artist. |

Definitely about the immigrant experience and the scamming of these vulnerable people through capitalism.
It’s a brilliant song, but mostly it is a tragic, sad and bitter song about our country’s conscious role in the royal scam. |

I love the rhythm in this song. I wouldn’t call it disco, just another musical strain in SDs repertoire.
It does make me want my husband to get his fez on asap. |

@[chadsmad:44114] I heard a version of the song on a Walter Becker album with DF singing. It brought me to tears because it has an edginess and haunting sound to it that is lacking on the CBAT album.
DF’s voice is one of a kind. I get goose bumps listening to him. |

@[bocoe:43998] I concur, sometimes the literal meaning isn’t important, it’s more the feel of the song, the overall theme behind the words, the obscurity and poetry. It all adds up to something often sad or desperate. |

@[JohnCCarter:43971] interesting story. What I like about SD lyrics is not just trying to figure them out, but how to connect them with glimpses of our own lives. Little pieces that make one think, I understand. |

@[rainwalk:43952] agree with you—I see the guy in desperate straits. We don’t know why exactly, could be many reasons that aren’t directly relevant, but the guy needs something new (eastern religion) to help him get over his rough spot. So much irony in this song. Could even be an existential mid life crisis of sorts. |

@[DebNeb:43950] SD songs are a good antidote to the MGMA crowd. And reflects how their songs have many universal themes that especially apply in our new age Trumpian World. |

I like SD but this song’s a bit over the top in a bad way.
Having said that, I did have a crush on my cousin when I was younger, but it was just a young girl looking up to her older cousin like a big brother kind of thing. Pretty innocent stuff. This song is none of that. Ewww. |

@[BigFire:43949] good thoughts. I was also thinking verse three was a flashback to when he had his first lunch with her, not realizing she’s nuts which then explains verse1and 2. But I actually like your interpretation better. |

These are all some eloquent thoughts about this song. I keep returning to this site to hear others’ ideas on SD songs. This song is really sad. A lot of SD songs are. A mournful, yearning realistic type of sad. |
