I wonder about this song. On reflection it sounds like the protangist of the song is an international arms dealer who's transactions (sells his arms) in new york are contrasted by distant violence which are the consequence. Swiss newspapers neve selling out? Is Walker perhaps linking international arms dealing with international financial systems? Who knows with Walker, anything is possible! But I love this track with its lush operatic highs and deafening deadstops where a simple flute is left to toot into the dead blackness of the void.....10/10 |

As with many of Walker's songs there is a darkness underneath the smooth, bond-like presentation. Walker is clearly riffing on Eliot's The Love Song Of J Alfred Priufrock here with the title and both are concerened with the desires and longings of a middle aged nobody wishing for more. Here it becomes clear that our poor Humphrey is being passed by and over in the career stakes and is chafing at a life of droll domesticity: kids, roller skates and telly. His one escape is a brothel in Channing ("enchanting") Way, where Ann and Corrina transport our deflated portagonist to somewhere else for a while.....Walker leaves this sadly devastating conclusion to the very end. By this time we are seduced by the song and indeed forget our own troubles for a while......10/10 |
