I like the LSD interpretation and that it appears to be a lovely song about a woman but is not what it seems to be. I love that about SD. Always keep me on my toes.

I like the different interpretations. I think the LSD and Eastern philosophy makes the most sense. It’s a beautiful song whatever it means.

@[caucasian:43877] thanks for your interpretation. Very deep analysis. SD songs are always so raw and emotional. They have passed the real test of time. Peace. Linda

I think he’s definitely up for a cheap fling as you word it. He wants the sex in spite of nothing in common with a 19 year old. Except the pot and booze where she’ll slide on down to him.

The song is suggestive and seductive so I think you’re on the right track. There’s probably more than one way to interpret it with all the sexual euphemisms. Regardless it’s a catchy song and I’ve e always enjoyed it.

I think the where the hell am I might be in reference to his (possibly) slight sense of guilt, like waking up the next day and thinking what the hell did I do with this 19 year old?

Agree that’s the premise of the song. Too many people don’t understand the context because they didn’t live back in the 60’s.

@[DaphneD:43817] I like your interpretation. It seems right on. I missed that the girls are coming on to him. Interesting. I thought it’s about him missing his youth and feeling lustful for the 19 year olds. Either way, I find it kind of a sad but also seductive song.

I was 20 when this song came out. Always one of my favorite SD songs, although there are many. Even as a young woman of 20 I felt passion for this lonely man singing the sour grapes of middle age. I like this song because it is so honest in the man’s longing for something most likely unattainable, something that has already come and gone, the vanishing ideas of youth, yet it is also very seductive song with his lust for the 19 year old. And now in my mid 60’s I completely understand that yearning for the past and my own youthful demise. They don’t make such bold songs anymore. And the Colombian is definitely pot. I smoked it right around that age of 20. Has nothing to do with cocaine. I just hope that lonely man finally found a love that worked out for him. Peace.
