| Bill Callahan – The Wind and the Dove Lyrics | 3 years ago |
|
There is no thought of peace (dove), when there is no train (wind, change) of thought. One could embrace the winds of change, and find peace within it, like a wondering or daydreaming child… |

Like the birds of thought, in his childlike wonder, he can go up in his thought [like a bird peering through the window]. In relation to the rest of the lyrics, a sort of peace comes from the train of thought, not true it’s absence… One can wonder and create one’s own serenity of thought, and hold on to it through the winds of change…. |

| On the whole album, birds are thoughts. So here the Dove is thought of peace. Thoughts move by change, like birds that fly on the wind. If there is no wind, there can also no thought of peace, as with no wind, the thoughts lay down. So, the concepts of wind (change) and dove (peace) are interconnected. So there can only be a form of peace when there is also trembling. Without tremblinding, he could not know the [concept of] peace. | |
| Bill Callahan – Too Many Birds Lyrics | 3 years ago |

The birds are his [too many] thoughts. The last black bird is a difficult thought, wich returns, as it it is not solved, maybe also by the chaos within his head, the too many thoughts [birds in the brain tree]. I agree the wish to silence the breath is a wish to silence the heart and brain, but the thoughts don't settle and unrest remains |

| Too many issues, problems, or complex thoughts. The tree is his brain, like is reffered to in the song All Thoughts Are Prey To Some Beast on this same album. | |
| Bill Callahan – Jim Cain Lyrics | 3 years ago |
|
By living more in the moment, his thoughts became lighter and issues more graspable. But the most heavy of his thoughts or isues weren’t settled or dealt with. The ordinary things might point to reality the way it shows itself (a natural wave in contrast to abstract thoughts), and/or the graspable, concrete issues of his live. He tried to view his life directly and without hesitation, self-sabotage The lightness of verse in the whole of the lyrics seems to indicate a sort of self-acceptance, and between the lines, an acceptance even of dead or suicide in the case of defeat. In the light of his style of songwriting, in the last years as Smog and then under his own name, also his lyrics and musical style became more concrete, harmonic and less obscure, though still with his typical sharp edges, both in words and music… |

Like in the first song, Jim Cain, a new start with present minded thoughts brought him lightness and freshness of thought, maybe like looking at each thought and issue as fresh. With the empty tree of thought, space came for thought like an eagle… The eagle represents strength and is considered to be the chief among all winged creatures. It also represents a symbol of power. It also symbolizes dawn, renewed life, and spring’s direction. In the song my Friend is the Big Thought, the eagle, explained as empathy and fight for the weak (so notations there), being partly a dream or vision, as indicated the title of whole album: Sometimes i wish we were an eagle. But being it a dream to shepperd all sheep, like all his thoughts, he could still do his best, creating room for his friends, also on the inside of his mind, the soft (emphatatic) thoughts that he can give space to understand and nurture what is fragile. As an eagle is also a preditor, it can represent his strenght or force, he seems to want to apply the strenght he has to defend the weak. |

| Richard & Linda Thompson – Night Comes In Lyrics | 3 years ago |

This song indeed probably is associated with his Sufi interest of the time. At some he even joint a Sufi communian for a while, it's said. The dance probably is the wirling Sufi dance, and his new friends are found in his new faith, altough i agree with the other comment the additional lyrics give some of it a twist: Well. I may find That street tomorrow Leave the shadow Of my lonely room See my one My one and only Heart and soul I'm coming soon This assumes his lust for real companionship is only a vision, ideal, dream or experience in his mind, not something aquired in reality yet... |
